Jim responds to me in regards to his awesome looking RV3,
and what he'd think about using the Walter-LOM in an RV-8..

Hello Eric,
I have the LOM M332A engine in my RV-3. It has 140 hp at 2700 RPM with the
supercharger engaged (max takeoff), and 115 hp at 2550 RPM without the
supercharger (max continuous).
My RV-3 weighs 805 empty. I'm a 10 for a bubba factor (my RV-3 max pilot
weigh is 309).
The performance is very good, especially considering the handicap I place on
it.
The Ivoprop Magnum prop lets the engine develop max power for takeoff. With
the RV-8, you'll have a choice of the existing European constant speed props
that are available for the engine.
I would think that you would want the LOM M332BK engine for the RV-8. It is
the 160 hp with the supercharger engaged.
The "K" designation indicates the engine has the inverted oil system
included. (This costs about $400 extra, but eliminates all the external
"Christen System" type stuff.)
Both the "A" and "B" model engines are fuel injected and supercharged.
The supercharger is turned on or off from the cockpit.
I had a Lyc. O-290-G in my RV-3 originally. I burned 6 gph at a true
airspeed of 165 mph (7,500' to 9,500').
With the LOM engine, I burn 5 gph at a true airspeed of 160 mph (7,500' to
9,500').
The top speed on the last flight with my Lyc. O-290-G engine was 196 mph true
at 7,500' density altitude.
With the LOM engine, I get the same 196 mph true airspeed at 7,500' density
altitude without the supercharger engaged. 206 mph with the supercharger
engaged.
I have been doing all my flight testing (props and engine) at 7,500' density
altitude.
The only lower level information I found is that I can reach Vne (210 mph
indicated) in level flight at least to 1,500' without the supercharger being
engaged.
